NAKURU
Lake Nakuru National Park is a spectacular safari destination in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, where visitors can witness the amazing sight of thousands of flamingos that gather on the shores of Lake Nakuru. These water birds feed on blue-green algae that grow in the alkaline waters of the lake. The algae give the flamingos their distinctive pink color, which varies from pale to bright depending on their diet.
The flamingos flock to the shores of Lake Nakuru in huge numbers, sometimes reaching up to 1.5 million individuals, forming a stunning sight of pink against the blue lake and the green vegetation. In addition to flamingos, the park boasts over 450 bird species, including pelicans, kingfishers, eagles and vultures.
Lake Nakuru National Park is not only a bird lover's paradise, but also a wildlife haven. The park hosts over 50 mammal species, including endangered black and white rhinos, rare Rothschild's giraffes, buffaloes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hippos and many more.
The park has a varied landscape, offering scenic views and diverse habitats. The most striking feature is the lake itself, which changes color from blue to pink depending on the algae concentration and the flamingo population. The lake is a Ramsar site, meaning it is a wetland of international importance.
