LAMU
Lamu is a historic and vibrant town on the island of the same name, just off Kenya's northeastern coast. It is the oldest living town in Kenya and the best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa.
Lamu Old Town, a maze of narrow streets and alleys lined with ancient buildings and mosques, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where visitors can experience the rich and diverse culture of the Swahili people. The Lamu Museum is housed in a grand Swahili warehouse on the waterfront, showcasing local history, culture, and art.
One of the main attractions here is Takwa, an abandoned Swahili town on Manda Island that dates back to the 15th century. Guests can see the ruins of mosques, tombs, wells, and houses that reveal the past glory of this once prosperous settlement. Tourists can also visit Shela Village, a picturesque hamlet with white stone houses and restaurants on the seafront. Visitors can enjoy Swahili cuisine, which is a unique and sophisticated blend of African and Eastern influences, including dishes such as pilau, biryani, curry, coconut rice, and seafood.
Lamu offers spectacular beaches, which stretch for kilometers along the Indian Ocean. Tourists can choose from different types of beaches, such as Shela, Manda, Kizingoni, and Matondoni. Each beach has its own charm and character, offering various facilities and activities.
