WATAMU
OVERVIEW
Watamu is a charming and tranquil village on the coast of Kenya, with a stunning white-sand beach that stretches for 7 kilometers along the Indian Ocean, surrounded by lush tropical forest and coral reefs. Popular attractions in Watamu include:
- Watamu Marine National Park: This park covers 10 square kilometers of coral gardens and fish life, offering visitors the opportunity to snorkel or dive in the clear water and see hundreds of species of fish, corals, turtles, and more.
- Watamu Turtle Watch: Watamu is known for its conservation projects, such as the Watamu Turtle Watch, which rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles and releases them back to the ocean.
- Dolphin Watching: One of the highlights of Watamu is dolphin watching, which is an established eco-tourism activity. Tourists can join a boat trip with Watamu Marine Excursions, who have over 20 years of experience and follow the dolphin watching guidelines. Visitors can see two types of dolphins: Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins and Indian Ocean humpback dolphins.
- Whale Watching: Watamu is also famous for whale watching, which is a seasonal activity that takes place between July and October. Once again, Watamu Marine Excursions offers a boat trip for this purpose, including trained guides and spotters. Visitors can see two types of whales: humpback whales and sperm whales.
